Impatiently Waiting! In the End by Demitria Lunetta

Expected publish date:
June 24, 2014

The thrilling conclusion to In the After, the survival story of Amy and Baby, set in a near future where Earth has been overrun by vicious, predatory creatures.

It’s been three months since Amy escaped New Hope, and she’s been surviving on her own, like she did in the After. Until one day, her former fellow Guardian’s voice rings out in her earpiece. And in a desperate tone, Kay utters the four words Amy had hoped she would never hear: Dr. Reynolds has Baby.

Now it’s a race against time, for Baby is in imminent danger, her life threatened by the malevolent doctor who had helped start the end of the world. In order to save Baby, Amy must make her way to Fort Black, a prison-turned-survivor-colony, where she will need to find Ken, Kay’s brother. He alone holds the key to Baby’s survival.

One small slip-up on this quest could spark a downward spiral that would not only cost Baby and Amy their lives, but threaten the very survival of the people in the After.

About the Book!
Elysium Chronicles #2
Six weeks after her arrival on the Surface, Evelyn Winters is no closer to unlocking the memories lost in her subconscious than she was when she first came. Isolated in a strange new society, Evie has only Gavin Hunter to remind her of who she once was.

But even with a clean slate, it’s easy to see that Evie doesn’t fit in on the Surface. And as her differences make her feel more and more alone, she can’t help but yearn for that place she doesn’t remember: the isolated city hidden in the depths of the ocean. Elysium. Home.

But she can’t exactly tell Gavin what she’s feeling. Not when he’s the one who helped her escape Elysium in the first place, and has the scars to prove it. Though the doctors say otherwise, Gavin believes that Evie just needs time. And if her memories don’t come back, well, maybe she’s better off not remembering her past.

But the decision may be out of their hands when Evie’s ever-elusive memories begin to collide with reality. People and images from her past appear in the most unlikely places, haunting her, provoking her…and making her seem not only strange but dangerous.

Evie and Gavin can’t wait around for her memories to return. They’ll have to journey across the Outlands of the Surface to find help, and in the end, their search may just lead them back to the place it all started…

Thank you so much for having me on your blog today and for being the first stop! I can’t believe the 2nd book in the series is coming out in about a week! It’s kind of surreal! A year ago I was panicking over RENEGADE coming out and now I get to panic over the 2nd one.

REVELATIONS itself was a lot harder for me to write then RENEGADE. If you’ve read it, then you know I sort of wrote myself into a corner at the end of it. *sheepish grin* So, of course, I had to figure a way out of it. Plus second books are just harder period, especially in a trilogy because you have to avoid the dreaded middle book syndrome.

As far as the characters though and which ones were easier to write than the others, none of the main, main characters were easy to write. There really isn’t a clear-cut villain. Mother is still, of course, very much a threat, but there’s an addition of a new one who while much quieter about his “evil” ways, he’s much more cunning.

Evelyn is an extremely complicated character by herself. She always has, and probably always will be, the hardest character I’ve ever written. And now, she’s especially so with all the new problems she has to face being in an unfamiliar world while essentially having to learn who she is all over again.

And Gavin, well, he’s just as complicated as her. We didn’t really get to see a whole lot from him in RENEGADE. But in REVELATIONS he’s a much more up front and center character with his own set of issues and obligations and everything else that he has to deal with it now that we’re in “his” world that weren’t there in RENEGADE. In fact, he was so complicated and so vocal about his story this time around, I had to give him his own POV, so REVELATIONS will have dual POVs.

As far as easiest character to write, though, I’d have to say it’s the new character I’ve introduced in REVELATIONS named Asher. In RENEGADE Evelyn was pretty much a loner due to her job responsibilities and Mother’s handiwork. Gavin on the other hand, hadn’t always been. In his past, he had friends and, of course, he has a large family, but somewhere along the line there was something that happened that made him change. To want to be a loner. To not trust anyone but himself and Asher is a big part of that reason.

And while Asher is complicated character himself with his own secrets, his story just flowed so easily onto the page. He knows exactly who he is and what he wants. He’s a perfect foil for Gavin and someone Evie can not only relate well to, but connect with. (However, no love triangle will be there. Promise. *wink*) He’s also someone I easily related to while writing him because he reminds me a lot of the “Southern Gentlemen” I’ve come across living in the South and I wanted to capture some of that elegance, manners, way of speaking, and general charm that they all exude and I think he does that perfectly.

While Gavin will always hold a special place in my heart, I absolutely adore Asher and love writing him and his story.

A guest post about all the paranormal aspects to your story/series (i.e., like the rules to your story when it comes to Soul Collectors or how someone is Soul Possessed and/or any other paranormal aspects. Maybe even write how you came up with these aspects.)

This is a great topic! I hope to keep it somewhat spoiler free for those new to the series so I won’t go into too much detail about Soul Possessed but I would like to talk about Soul Collectors and the Guard. My souls are transported to the After when their human life is over. Souls are chosen and offered a job and they can either take the job or opt to be Recycled, in which they are sent back the Living Realm and into a new life.

Soul Collectors have a very important job. They safely transport the soul from the Living Realm to the After. They are able to walk the Living Realm in their non-corporeal (AKA invisible) soul form during their missions. And while they can’t interact with anyone, they can transport anywhere they want which is a great perk! Soul Taken starts with Maggie as a Soul Collector. She has been a Collector for over a century but she has her eye on a bigger prize, which is to be a part of the elite Guard.

It is tough to move up from a Soul Collector to a Guard but Maggie has a fantastic Collecting record, which she is sure to get her there. The Guard are a group of souls who are trained to go on top secret missions for the Caeleste (the After Realm beings) in the great effort of protecting human souls from the Shadowed (more on them in Soul Possessed!). The Guard have slightly different abilities. For instance they can appear corporeal (seen) or non-corporeal on the Living Realm. And they have a kick-butt weapon, it looks like a broadsword but it is a very light and graceful tool.

I hope you enjoy the world I created and I do appreciate Magical Urban Fantasy Reads for hosting my tour today!

But the very things that Callie fights so hard to save are the very things that fight to destroy her.

☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆

I ‘ve sat down with the two main characters in Because the Night, Callie Chabot and Tristan Trevosier. I like to think I leave them to their own devices, but they seem to think I have some explaining to do.

Tristan: So why us? What made you put us together? I mean, I don’t mind, but she makes me work for it. I’m not used to that.

Kristen: Exactly! Tristan, you were always the constant character. The bad boy rock star. There were many incarnations of Callie, but I always had a weakness for the story where the bad boy had a thing for the good girl who didn’t chase after him. Rock stars always have women chasing them.

Callie: Tell me about it. (sighs)

Kristen: Although, I let you two do as you wish and I just write it all down. You’re developing a bit of a reputation, Callie.

Callie: (surprised) I am?

Kristen: Yeah. A lot of people really want to knock some sense into you as they read the book.

Callie: Wow. I don’t go looking for trouble.

Tristan scoffs and takes a sip of his drink. Callie smacks him.

Callie: I don’t! I do what seems right at the time. I don’t like it when my friends are hurting. Speaking of, why did you make Tristan such a mess?

Tristan: Are we still trying to save me from the big bad vampire?

Callie: Please. Now I know you’re beyond help.

Tristan: Right. Now you know you like me this way. (runs his hand along Callie’s thigh)

Kristen: Oh my God, you two, I’d tell you to get a room, but we need to do this guest post. I based Tristan on Nikki Sixx.

Tristan: Frigging Awesome.

Kristen: I know! I figured anyone who died twice and lived to tell about it deserved a fictional character based on their likeness. You’ve only died once Tristan. Callie and I still need to put you through the ringer so you can catch up to Nikki.

Tristan: (grins) You two ladies can do anything you’d like to me.

Callie and Kristen both roll their eyes.

Callie: Does it bother you that people think I make bad decisions?

Kristen: Sometimes. But I really let you take your own path, even if I knew better. You needed to learn for yourself what would happen by doing these things. I moved to Las Vegas when I was ten years older than you and still got myself in over my head. And I’d had a lot more life experience than you had.

Callie: So you get it.

Kristen: Believe it or not, Callie, everyone seems to. We’ve all been there.

Callie: Do you think things would have been different had I not had such an isolated childhood?

Kristen: I don’t know. I had so much freedom as a teenager, I’m a bad judge of that.

Tristan: ( comes closer to me) What about me?

Kristen: Nah, you were destined for disaster, growing up a spoiled rich kid.

Tristan: (leans forward with elbows on leather clad knees) Enough with the past. Why did you waste my time with this Blade story line? Like Bradley has a chance.

Callie: Tristan!

Kristen: Blade walked into the story unannounced and I expected him to last a scene or two, but I had such a crush on him when I got to know his character, I realized he had just as much as a place in this story as you do.

Tristan: (shakes his head) You’re both pathetic.

Callie: Ignore him. It works. So what do you like most about the both of us?

Kristen: I like that you both do exactly what you want to do, no matter what anyone thinks. It might not be the right thing for anyone but yourselves.

Callie: Do you wish we would have done anything differently?

Kristen: (thinks for a minute) No. If you had, you wouldn’t have been the characters you became. I love you both for your good and bad decisions.

Tristan: See, beautiful? She likes us.

Callie: She created us. She kind of has to.

Exclusive Excerpt!

Finn began to play. Voices descended into a respectful hush. Soft strums of the guitar lifted and fell on shafts of daylight from the windows. A small patch of sun warmed my exposed neck as I listened. The orange beads of his bracelet flashed as he plucked the strings with slender fingers. His head hung over the guitar in reverent concentration.

His playing was amazing, sweet and peaceful. For a while I let go of how bizarre my life had become. I was entranced long before Finn closed his eyes and opened his mouth to sing. His voice was rich, smooth suede, perfectly suited for the blues: soulful and vulnerable. The kind of voice that reaches inside and squeezes what’s tender.

When he sang an Irish bar song called “The Wild Rover,” he got the entire crowd to join in on the chorus. A couple of times during his performance, his gaze fell on me and lingered as if he sang directly to me. I rested my chin on my hand, hiding my smile behind my fingers. The last song was in a language I didn’t understand, but my soul spoke that language. Deep inside, something cracked open so that a bit of my truest self could peek out. His music was bluesy and mournful, eerily familiar, and it opened my heart in locked places. A tear landed on my wrist.

When the final chord of the last song reverberated through the coffeehouse, the audience jumped to its feet and applauded wildly. The force of energy from the crowd knocked the breath out of me, making me dizzy. I dared a look at the people in the room. The colors were unbelievable! Such power. It rolled toward Finn in a wave, a tsunami in slow motion. I had the impulse to leap in front of him, to protect him from it.

My body jerked in response to the thought, and I squeezed the sides of the wooden chair, willing myself to sit still. I couldn’t trust myself and the strong urge to protect him. But from what? The big, bad colors I could see but that were invisible to everyone else? He’d think I was crazy.

Maybe I was.

A chill spidered up my spine. The man with the crazy eyes and pure white aura leaned against the brick wall a couple feet away, staring intently at me. Icy fear spiked through me, making my fingers tingle and my breath come in quick bursts. The sounds of the room fell away. My heart sped and my aura sparked as I saw the roiling ball of the crowd’s energy pass over the man and collide with Finn. But rather than crush him, the energy crashed and blended with his own bright aura, making it grow and pulse fiercely. He seemed to absorb the light until the room grew dim to my eyes.

Untouched by the energy, the strange man moved closer and closer to me. I called out to Dun, but he couldn’t hear me over the shouts and clapping. I was so small in my chair amid the standing crowd. The man and his dark eyes were all I could see. I tried to leap up to run, to grab Dun’s arm, to call for help, but my chest jerked toward the stranger as if I’d been punched in the spine. I couldn’t draw breath, couldn’t move through the thick ice of my draining energy and rising panic. I was hit in the face with a blast of air. Then, a sudden flash of white.

The world tilted sideways, and I slid off.

The Excerpt

Instead of bringing us out to seats in the audience, Tony led us to the side of the stage to a spot just behind the curtain, feet away from Tristan. When he spotted me, he winked at me like we shared a private joke, and continued with his performance. I sucked in my breath and held on for the ride.

Being so close to the band as they put on their show was much more intimate than the first time we saw them. The heat of the flash pots made the faces of the background dancers glow. We moved out of the way as the roadies scrambled to change instruments for the band. I strained my eyes to read all the notes plastered on the stage. I peeked around the curtain every so often to get a look at the crowd, who were completely enthralled with everything the band did.

But mostly, I just watched Tristan. Tonight he wore his signature black leather pants, which clung dangerously low below his hipbones. They ended in black combat boots that were casually untied. He topped the outfit off with a black T shirt adorned with an intricate white pattern that clung like a second skin. His eyes were heavily rimmed with black liner and his hair hung in his face, down on his chest and back. It swung around him as he roamed all over the stage. His fingers moved over his guitar seductively, teasing it, bringing it to the brink of hysteria then coaxing it back down to a purr. Almost as if he was making love to it.

The thought made me flush all over. I could hardly bear to watch him, but I couldn’t look away.

Tristan walked off the stage before I was ready to stop watching him. He came right to me.

“Look who’s my date tonight,” his eyes moved down my body.

“You have a date tonight?” I glanced behind me before it hit me. He meant me.

“Yes,” he reached out and put his hands on my hips. Even after running around on stage under those bright lights for over an hour, he hadn’t so much as broken a sweat. His stage makeup was still perfect. He leaned in so he could speak close to my ear. “And she looks fabulous in her little black dress.”

“Thanks,” I managed, but it didn’t seem like enough, looking up at Tristan, with his eyes just inches from mine. We might as well have been in another universe. The music on the stage had resumed. “Don’t you have to go back out on stage?”

He shook his head, his eyes never leaving mine. “It’s just his solo. And truthfully, Callie, the show will start again whenever I decide to go back out there. They can wait.”

“Oh.” I gulped so hard it hurt. What was he going to do?

But I am going to go back out there, just for a few minutes. I want this part of the night to be over so I can spend the rest of the evening with my date.” He leaned in, kissing me chastely on the lips, like we had just done this yesterday, like he hadn’t ever walked out of my life, and then turned to walk back out on stage. My legs felt like jelly. I wrapped my arms around my midsection and half leaned, half fell against the equipment case next to me. Every time I looked at him, I slipped in deeper over my head.

Keisha brought me back to this realm by whacking my arm. “Girl. That was hot.”

Ten Tiny Breaths by K.A. Tucker

Publisher’s summary: Just breathe, Kacey. Ten tiny breaths. Seize them. Feel them. Love them.

Four years ago, Kacey Cleary’s life imploded when her car was hit by a drunk driver, killing her parents, boyfriend, and best friend. Still haunted by memories of being trapped inside, listening to her mother take her last breath, Kacey wants to leave her past behind. Armed with two bus tickets, Kacey and her fifteen-year-old sister, Livie, escape Grand Rapids, Michigan, to start over in Miami. They’re struggling to make ends meet at first, but Kacey’s not worried. She can handle anything—anything but her mysterious neighbor in apartment 1D.

Trent Emerson has smoldering blue eyes and deep dimples, and perfectly skates that irresistible line between nice guy and bad boy. Hardened by her tragic past, Kacey is determined to keep everyone at a distance, but their mutual attraction is undeniable, and Trent is desperate to find a way into Kacey’s guarded heart—even if it means revealing an explosive secret that could shatter both their worlds.

My Take: OK! So I totally now get why everyone’s obsessing over K.A. Tucker’s NA Contemporary Ten Tiny Breaths, why they were all eagerly awaiting One Tiny Lie and why the already independently published Ten Tiny Breaths was picked up by Atria Publishing! And that’s because K.A. Tucker’s writing is amazing! She creates extremely vivid scenes, she does a phenomenal job bringing each character and their personalities to life and she always keeps the story flowing at a steady pace that keeps you interested and wanting more! And that is exactly what she did in Ten Tiny Breaths!

However, even though I’m already a huge fan of K.A. Tucker and her Causal Enchantment Series, I’m not really big on Contemporary, and it’s pretty much always been a HECK NO when it comes to the New Adult genre. In New Adult books, the characters are usually a little bit older than in Young Adult and I think the whole point of the genre is to show the characters actually having sex, and it’s the detailed sex scenes that I’d like to stay away from. So, even though I’m still leery about New Adult, I’ve started to give Contemporary a try. Luckily, I didn’t feel like K.A. Tucker took it too far in the sex department! And, since I’ve exclusively been listening to the audios of the Contemporary books that I have actually started to try, I was thrilled to discover that Ten Tiny Breaths was available with Audible!

As for the characters, Kacey, the main character, is pretty dang badass and she’s super funny too. But she’s got some SERIOUS mental issues. (Due to her past, it’s understandable that she’s a little mentally messed up.) And Livie is the perfect little sister. She’s so sweet and innocent that she would be anyone’s ideal little sister. Storm, the stripper neighbor, is totally awesome and her daughter, Mia, is just the most adorable little girl. But one of my favorite characters is a doctor who makes his appearance near the end of the book, and he rocks! Except, I’m not so sure I’d actually like him as my doctor. OH…and then there is Cain! He’s super cool too! OK…so you’re probably getting the idea that I like every character. LOL! But last of all there is Trent! All I’m gonna say is he’s a hottie and I was rooting for him throughout the entire book.

Now for the story . . . Ten Tiny Breaths starts off with Kacey and Livie arriving in their new home in Miami, running from something potentially horrible in Grand Rapids, MI. They’re starting a whole new life which means that Kacey basically needs to start from scratch. The story moves along really quickly and K.A. keeps the story very entertaining. I think my favorite scene was probably when Kacey finds a rattlesnake in the shower. That scene was hilarious and it led to something even more hilarious. Near the end of Ten Tiny Breaths there is a very crazy twist/reveal which made me think to myself, “Yep! There’s K.A. Tucker’s twisted brain in action.” This twist messes everything up but it also makes the whole story so much more brilliant.

So, if you’re looking for a brilliant Contemporary that will keep you glued to your reading chair…look no further! Read this book!!!
