Drink Slay Love by Sarah Beth Durst

Publisher's Summary: Pearl is a sixteen-year-old vampire . . . fond of blood, allergic to sunlight, and mostly evil . . . until the night a sparkly unicorn stabs her through the heart with his horn. Oops.

Her family thinks she was attacked by a vampire hunter (because, obviously, unicorns don't exist), and they're shocked she survived. They're even more shocked when Pearl discovers she can now withstand the sun. But they quickly find a way to make use of her new talent. The Vampire King of New England has chosen Pearl's family to host his feast. If Pearl enrolls in high school, she can make lots of human friends and lure them to the King's feast—as the entrÉes.

The only problem? Pearl's starting to feel the twinges of a conscience. How can she serve up her new friends—especially the cute guy who makes her fangs ache—to be slaughtered? Then again, she's definitely dead if she lets down her family. What's a sunlight-loving vamp to do?

My Take: Drink Slay Love was a lot of fun to read. It was a nice change to read a YA Urban Fantasy Romance with mostly silly humor in it. Compared to just about every other YA Urban Fantasy book out there now, the rolls have now reversed and the herione (main character) is the bad guy.

The beginning was by far the best part as it sets a silly tone for the remainder of the book. Pearl's favorite place to eat is the local Dairy Hut, which she’s claimed as her own feeding territory. She’s a vamp so when I say “eat,” I mean she’s really feeding off the human employee at the Dairy Hut. But before she feeds, she orders an ice cream flavor that suits her fancy and forces the human to eat it. (Whatever a human eats gives that flavor to their blood.) So if Pearl picks mint ice cream, her meal tastes minty fresh! Isn’t this concept fabulous? Well, it’s close to dawn so Pearl knows she must hurry up and feed and get back to her house soon! But after she’s done drinking from her human and sends him on his way, she turns around and standing right before her is a unicorn! I’m thinking “Seriously…a unicorn?” Her reaction was the same as mine only her humorous personality was cracking me up. She tries to shoo the unicorn away telling him to go poop a rainbow. However, when Pearl turns away from the unicorn, he stakes her with his horn! I thought, “Who the heck would think of something so completely off the wall?”

There are so many things in Drink Slay Love that are amazingly comical but I don’t want to spoil everything for you. The book doesn’t really start to get any more serious until Pearl suddenly discovers she can now walk in the sun. The only logical explanation she can come up with is that her new ability is the result of being staked by the unicorn . . . but that can’t be right, can it?! And even her own family doesn’t believe THAT story.

Her family wants to use her new ability as a tool to get close to humans so they can gain entry to their homes for feeding purposes, so they enroll Pearl into high school. I loved how at one part (while she is surrounded by a large mass of humans) she was grossed out by being surrounded by her food! She thought it was like...well, humans wouldn’t like to hang out in a chicken coop, would they? Mwahahaha! I’m lovin’ it!

There is so much fun in this book! There's a crazy hectic ending that leaves you with a little bit of a cliffhanger but it’s an ending that makes you feel that there really isn’t a NEED for another book after this one.

I want to read this book! The cover is so gorgeous & the synopsis sounds great. It sounds like such a unique book. I mean...unicorns?! Great review!

Oh wow... this sounds so unusual. I love the fact that it's humorous too. As a YA author myself, I do believe that many YA novels these days do lack comedy.
I'm adding this to my TBR list, for sure!
